Internet Fraud, Phishing and Spoofing

Phishing involves fraudulent emails that seem to come from legitimate companies with which you have interacted. These emails, along with fake websites resembling authentic ones, aim to extract financial data and personal information from unsuspecting users. As phishing and spoofing emails can look genuine and appear to be from real people, organizations, or websites, we suggest taking the following precautions:

1. Be cautious of unsolicited emails: Always be wary of unexpected emails, particularly those requesting personal or financial information. Legitimate companies usually do not request such details through email.

2. Verify the sender's email address: Check if the sender's email address matches the company's official domain. Be aware that fraudsters can mimic legitimate email addresses, so this is not a foolproof method.

3. Hover over links: Before clicking on any links in an email, hover your cursor over them to reveal the actual URL. If it looks suspicious or does not match the A2D's domain, do not click on it.

4. Avoid downloading attachments: Refrain from downloading or opening attachments from unknown senders, as they may contain malware or viruses.

5. Look for security indicators: Make sure the website you are visiting uses HTTPS and displays a padlock symbol in the browser's address bar, indicating a secure connection.

6. Keep software updated: Regularly update your operating system, browser, and antivirus software to protect against the latest threats.

7. Use strong passwords: Create complex passwords and change them regularly. Avoid using the same password across multiple accounts.

8. Enable two-factor authentication: When available, enable two-factor authentication for added security.

9. Report suspicious emails: If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from a company you have done business with, report it to the company immediately. Do not reply to the email or click any links within it.

10. Educate yourself: Stay informed about the latest phishing and spoofing tactics to better protect yourself from potential scams.

11. Always type the official website address (URL) when logging into A2D or your financial institutions.

12. Review websites for their privacy policies and guidance on staying safe online.

13. Be wary of any request that asks you to disclose or verify information about yourself or your accounts, in particular, passwords or other information that a financial services provider may use to identify you (e.g. date of birth, mother’s maiden name).
